How to fix: Access to Linux filesystem very slow, apps take 30 seconds to start

(I am putting this here so that the users experiencing similar problem can Google the solution)

My Linux PC (XUbuntu) started exhibiting a weird problem suddenly. After several days of uptime, most apps suddently started to take around 30 seconds to start up and they started locking up for 30 seconds when they accessed my local filesystem after longer time. Everything fixed itself after restart but I don't want to restart my main PC often.

I Googled extensively and found similar problems which were usually caused by networked filesystem or failing hard disk.

But this was not my case and I finally found the solution. If this starts happening, just issue the following command:

pkill gvfsd-trash

And it will immediately be fixed.

The problem is with gvfsd-trash app (which handles some kind of special access to your Trash Bin and you probably don't ever use it). You can find extensive discussion about this problem here on the Stack Exchange.

Oh my, how the time flies!

So, it's now more than 4 years later, Google+ is shutting down shortly and many other things have also changed.

All my stuff that you used to read on this blog and later on Google+ is now available here on my website. In various fomats, compatible with OpenSocial and not dependent on some tech giant's centralized social network (hopefully).

Mostly dead

Note that this English language blog is not updated since May 2012 when the number of Czech readers became an order of magnitude bigger than number my English readers.

Tidbits from my personal life (in Czech) can be found on www.FFFilm.name (amongst my film reviews), and on my Google Plus.

The end of an era, the beginning of a different era

Because Hanka cannot wear ring or necklaces (because of the violin playing) I gave her these earrings as an engagement present:

After many, many years of looking for someone to spend the rest of my life with, I found someone. Hanka is not perfect (nobody is ever perfect) but much, much closer to perfection than anyone I ever found before. And, of course, she found me. I hope she did.

The biggest challenge facing both of us now is to not lose any of those great things we found so far. Whatever happens.

Also, her ears are not hairy, that's just the poor lighting and the mobile flash...

R.I.P. Lukáš Ladra

He was THE father of Czech videogaming journalism, he was just a couple of years older than me and he died unexpectedly a week ago.

This is how his closest friend Jakub Červinka said goodbye to him:

The last piece is my arrangement of Chris Huelsbeck's Turrican II ending theme. Check the video description for the MP3 download link...

Tsukiji Fish Market Visitor Restrictions

Beware! If you intend to visit the fascinating Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, there are now rather brutal  restrictions for tourists!

The tuna auctions (photo below) from 5 am to 6 am are now only accessible to 120 "outsiders" in total (first come first serve basis) without the possibility of registering in advance.

Tsukiji tuna

As for the rest of the market, it's now only accessible to outsiders after 9 am, making it very impractical to see both the tuna auction and the market.

And about half of the market is now strictly off limits, all the time, to all visitors.

All the info is on the official site (in English), but it's pretty well hidden.

Yin & Yang

I think this random photo (by Thereza) captures the different natures of my two dogs rather well...

I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL!
